Factors That Influence Skilled and Less-Skilled Comprehenders’ Inferential Processing During and After Reading

چکیده
This study examines factors that influence readers’ cognitive processing (i.e., inference generation) and the development of a mental representation text: comprehension skill working memory (WM). Elementary students (N = 61) participated in causal questioning conditions with narrative texts to examine text- knowledge-based inferences generated when probed during versus after reading. Recalls were examined assess representations after-reading answering questions. Skilled comprehenders more goal- subgoal-related text-based reading included original text information less background knowledge their recalls than did less-skilled comprehenders. high WM also goal-related those low WM. Findings support extend previous research regarding how readers struggle generation may further inform interventions help improve struggling texts.

An electrophysiological investigation of semantic and phonological processing in skilled and less-skilled comprehenders.
The most prominent theories of reading consider reading comprehension ability to be a direct consequence of lower-level reading skills. Recently however, research has shown that some children with poor comprehension ability perform normally on tests of lower-level skills (e.g., decoding). One promising line of behavioral research has found semantic processing differences between good and poor c...
متن کاملOrthographic and phonological preview benefits: parafoveal processing in skilled and less-skilled deaf readers.
Many deaf individuals do not develop the high-level reading skills that will allow them to fully take part into society. To attempt to explain this widespread difficulty in the deaf population, much research has honed in on the use of phonological codes during reading. The hypothesis that the use of phonological codes is associated with good reading skills in deaf readers, though not well suppo...
متن کاملFactors distinguishing skilled and less skilled deaf readers: evidence from four orthographies.
This study aims to enhance understanding of the factors underlying variance in the reading comprehension skills of prelingually deaf individuals. Participants were 213 sixth through tenth graders with prelingual deafness recruited from four orthographic backgrounds (Hebrew, Arabic, English, and German) and allocated to three distinct reading profiles (levels). A sentence comprehension test mani...

This article presents the results of a lexical decision experiment in which the base frequency (BF) effect is explored in reading disabled children and skilled readers. Three groups of participants were created. The first group was composed of children with reading disorders, the second group of skilled readers matched with the first group for chronological age and the third group of skilled re...
متن کاملLess skilled comprehenders’ ERPs show sluggish word-to-text integration processes
We examined the word-to-text integration processes of less skilled comprehenders using ERPs recorded during text reading. The first sentence of each text controlled the accessibility of an antecedent referent for a critical word, which was the first content word of the second sentence. In the explicit condition, the critical word had occurred in the first sentence; in the paraphrase condition, ...
